Description

The Beagle is a breed that is as rich in breed history, as in what breeds it took to get where it is today. On more that one occasion the breed almost completely died out, and it wasn’t until the beginning of the 20th century that the dog finally had a firm foot hold. The Beagle became recognized by the AKC in 1884. A Beagle by the name of Derawunda Vixen won Best in Show at Crufts in 1959. The Beagle has always done better in the U.S. than in its native country of Britain. The Beagle stands 13 to 16 in. tall at the withers and weighs anywhere between 18 to 35 lbs. Females being on the smaller end of the scale. Well muscled the Beagle has a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors. Tri-colored Beagles are most common and popular, but they also come in Bi-colors variations as well these colors include lemon, liver, tan, blue, and black. The can also come ticked or freckled. Beagles have one of the keenest noses around…something a new Beagle owner should never forget. Bred for the chase the Beagle is a die hard hunter.

Temperament

A gentle dog with a even temperament the Beagle is a fantastic dog for families with children. Wary of strangers at first but easily won over the Beagle does not make a good guard dog, but will make a good watch dog due to him barking at all things unfamiliar. They can develop separation anxiety when left alone, but do get along well with other dogs. They will need special attention to training and are easily sidetracked if they pick up a scent.

Grooming/Exercise

The Beagles short coat is relatively easy to care for with regular brushing with a stiff bristled brush, and bathing when needed with a mild soap. You will need to pay attention to the ears to keep them clean, and free of debris. A healthy amount of exercise is needed to keep your Beagle happy. Long walks in the park on a leash are a goo form of exercise for this dog. If you plan on living in an apartment or townhouse you should be aware the Beagle is fairly active indoors and does need a secure area to play in.

Health

Life Expectancy is 12 to 15 years.

Possible Issues

Heart Disease

Epilepsy

Back Problems

Eye Issues

Chondroplasia (dwarfism)

Ear Infections
