Description

The Australian Cattle Dog is known by many names…Hall’s Heeler, Queensland Heeler, Blue Heeler, and Australian Heeler. The Standard was set for this breed by one Robert Kaleski in 1893 and was approved in Australia in 1903. The American Kennel Club recognized this breed in 1980. The history of this dog is fairly convoluted in that there is everything in this dog from a Dingo to a Kelpie and it is rumored that a Dalmatian played a part in this breeds unique coloring. The Cattle Dog male stands between 17 and 20 in. tall at the withers and weighs between 32 and 35 lbs. Female Cattle Dogs stand between 17 and 19 in. tall and weigh between 30 and 35 lbs. The durable double coat is short and straight and is blue or red speckled with blue, tan or black markings on the head.

Temperament

This is a working dog, and is not going to be happy hanging out waiting for you to come home from work…he needs to have something to do, and someone to do it with. They would be perfect for a work at home person that is extremely active. The Cattle Dog is quick and smart and will easily train for the right person. You will need to be a solid pack leader and take charge with this dog. This dog tends to bond with only one person, and doesn’t really make a good family dog.

Grooming/Exercise

Brushing with a good brush is all that is required with this breed and a good bath when needed. He will need a ton of exercise. Cattle Dogs have an enormous amount of energy and stamina and intelligence. They need both physical and mental exercise on a daily basis. If you like jogging this is the dog for you. This dog will not be happy in an apartment he needs a secure yard to run and play in.

Life Expectancy is 12 to 15 years.
