Description

The American Bulldog is the closest surviving relative to the Old English Bulldog, and possibly descendant of the Alaunts. They are a Mastiff type dog Large in size, well built, muscular, and strong. They have a short coat… white with either patches of black or brindle, or fawn, or all white. They can be pretty much any combination as long as there is white in the coat. They are 20 to 28 in. at the withers and weigh between 60 to 125 lbs, and have long legs, big heads, and sometimes has Heterochromia…different colored Irises.You can get dogs with one or both blue eyes.

Temperament

This breed will bond closely with his owner, and his family. Tolerant of children, and can do well with them if raised with them. If properly socialized ( regular walks in the dog park are good for this), and with some obedience training at a young age the American Bulldog will be more accepting and controllable around strangers, and other dogs…not to mention a fantastic guard dog, and wonderful family pet. If socialized also at a young age with other pets (birds, hamsters, cats) in the home  they may do well. This dog needs a firm hand, and an experienced owner would be best. Someone who can be the dogs pack leader.

Grooming/Exercise

The American Bulldog has a short coat that with regular brushing with a stiff bristled brush is easy to maintain. Bathe when necessary. This big boy needs lots of exercise, and will not do well in an apartment. He needs a large secure space to play in and long walks in the park…with his human being the pack leader. He is high energy and enjoy a lot of activity.

Health

Life Expectancy is around 14 years.
