Havanese

Description

These adorable little dogs were the darling of the Aristocratic families in Cuba during the 18 and 19th centuries. A lady by the name of Mrs. Goodale managed to locate a few of the breed that had papers in the U.S.A. back in the 1970’s from Cuban immigrants and started to bring the breed back from near extinction. The UKC recognized the breed in 1991 and the AKC followed in 1996 with the CKC a bit later in 2001. The Havanese is between 8 and 11 in. tall at the withers and weighs between 7 and 13 lbs. The fur on the Havanese is double thick and soft and grows between 6 to 8 in. long. The coat comes in any color.

Temperament

Natural born companions the Havanese bonds closely with its family and love children. A very social breed the Havanese will get along with everybody and all household pets…including the cat. They are eager to please their families and are intelligent and obedient. They make wonderful watch dogs letting you know whens something is not right, or if you have visitors. Properly socialized the Havanese will make a great addition to your family.

Grooming/Exercise

If your not willing to deal with all the fur of the Havanese you can take them to your groomers and have it clipped short, but if you choose to keep his lustrous locks you will need to comb and brushed at least twice a week to keep it health and free from debris. They also require a special lotion used on the hair to keep it from splitting, and becoming frizzy. He need to go on daily walks to stay fit. The Havanese will do fine living in a townhouse or apartment as long as his need for exercise is met.

Life Expectancy is between 14 and 15 years.
