Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Description

From the Swiss Alps comes the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. He is most likely the oldest and is definitely the largest of the Sennehund breeds which are made up of the Appenzell Cattle Dog, Bernese Mountain Dog and the Entlebuch Cattle Dog. He is descendant of Roman Mastiffs that were with the Roman armies over 2000 years ago. All four of these breeds are of different sizes, but they all retain the same markings. Because of his great ability as a draft animal the Greater Swiss Mountain dog was also known as “the poor man’s horse”. The first Greater Swiss came to America in 1967. This breed is fully recognized by the AKC. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog stands between 23.5 and 28.5 in tall and weighs between 130 -135 lbs. He has a wonderfully tri colored coat (black, rust, and white) that has a thick undercoat with a two in. long top coat.

Temperament

These dogs for the right owner make a wonderful addition to the family. Protective, but no aggressive the Greater Swiss make fantastic watchdogs sounding the alert when something is wrong. They are loving and loyal, intelligent, and courageous. They will do well if properly socialized with other pets in the home, and will be tolerant of all the family accepts if introduced. They need to know who the pack leader is in the home to be a successful family pet.

Grooming/Exercise

Simplistic grooming needs for this dog in the form of regular brushing. He is an average shedder. Bathe only when needed, but to make this task easier it is something he should be comfortable with at an early age. He will need to be taken on long daily walks to stay in shape, and as long as the get the required amount of exercise they will do fine living in a townhouse or condo type situation.
