Fila Brasileiro

This breed was developed from Bloodhounds, English Mastiffs, Bulldogs, and Rafeiros (Portuguese guard dog) somewhere around the 15th century. The Fila has some of the best attributes from each breed…From the Bloodhound they have the loose skin and incredible sense of smell and tracking abilities. Filas have the body structure of the English Mastiff, and the temperament of a Bulldog. Filas have wonderful guard dog skills inherited from the Rafeiros. Filas (both male and female, with females on the smaller end of the height and weight chart) are required to be between 24 (for females) and 29.5 in. tall for males with the minimum 27 in., and weigh between 90 (for females) to a minimum of 110 lbs (for males). These are some of the largest of the Molosser type dogs. Filas are a smooth coated, short haired dog. They come in a small variety of colors Brindle, Reddish Tans, and Yellow. They may have some white markings on them but those are not to exceed 1/4 of the body and are limited to feet, chest, and the tip of the tail.
Temperament
Doesn’t take a genius to figure out that these dogs make wonderful guard dogs they have all the necessary skills, and a natural dislike and mistrust of strangers. Filas are extremely loyal to its family and friends, but this breed is most definitely not for everyone. Filas demand training from an experienced dog owner, someone who has done their homework on this breed and has had other dogs of the Molosser type would be strongly recommended. The Fila will bond deeply with his immediate family, playing with the children, and protecting them above all else…even the other pets in the home will be protected. This is not a dog for a busy household as it will never accept strangers. Its illegal to own this dog in the UK, Norway, Australia, and Israel without specific exemption from the courts.
Grooming/Exercise
Simple brushing with a stiff bristled brush and wiping down with a chamois cloth when finished to bring a lustre to his coat is all that is needed with the Fila. Bathe when needed. He will need daily walks with you in charge, and can sleep outdoors if given proper shelter from the weather. He needs a very secure and large area to run and play, so apartment living is out of the question for this massive beast.
