English Pointer

Description
The breed dates back to somewhere around 1650, and is said to have been the combination of four breeds of dogs…the Bull Terrier, Foxhounds, Bloodhounds, and Greyhounds. Pointers were bred to aid hunters. In the beginning they were used in conjunction with a Retriever, and the Pointer was just used for locating and pointing out the game. In the 1800′s the Pointer thrived in America. This dog stands at 23 to 28 in. tall and weigh around 45 to 75 lbs. With females being on the smaller end of the height and scale. The range of colors for this dog are black, orange, liver and lemon patches on a white background. The lighter colored dog may have lighter colored noses. The Pointer is an extremely athletic, and graceful dog. Always very alert and on the ready.
Temperament
Even though the Pointer is a hunting dog at heart he happiest when indoors and part of the family unit. They are non aggressive and loyal to their owners, and they will get along well with the other pets in the family such as cats and dogs as long as properly socialized. The Pointer makes a good watch dog just with the shear size of them and their loud bark. You will most likely find this dog lounging on the furniture when your not around.
Grooming/Exercise
Regular brushing is all this smooth coated breed needs. Bathe when necessary making sure to towel dry the dog after so he doesn’t catch a chill. Paying close attention to the ears after bathing or hunting to make sure there is no water in them. After hunting or exercise check the pads of the feet to make sure they are not chaffed, or cut. This dog requires above average amount of exercise, and will require and active family to see to his needs. Condo life is not recommended for this dog. He a large secure yard and a great deal of vigorous exercise.
