Dogue De Bordeaux

Description

Dogue De Bordeaux also known as the French Mastiff is a very ancient French Breed. They have served many purposes in history…protector of flocks, castle guard, cart dog. The weight minimum on this large dog is 99 lbs for females and 110 lbs for the males. They can be a lot bigger, but not any smaller than the minimum. The height when mature should be between 23 1/2 to 26 1/2 for males, and 22 1/2 to 25 1/2 for females. They are a reddish color, with amber colored eyes,and pink noses. White marking on the toes and chest are allowed. They may also have a black or red mask. Powerfully built, good muscular structure, and a short straight top line, broad and heavy headed. They hail from the region of Bordeaux France. somewhere around the 14th century is when the breed was first discovered. The Bordeaux quite possibly predate Bull mastiffs and Bulldogs, and until 1920 or so there wasn’t any breed conformity.

Temperament

Not aggressive the Bordeaux is instead vigilant, and courageous making him a superb guard dog. Loyal, loving and devoted to his master and family. He is a calm, an even tempered companion and protector. This giant dog is gentle with children, but he will not a good dog for the beginner, as he needs a firm hand in training and a strong human pack leader. The Bordeaux is a dog who snores…and drools so be prepared.

Grooming/Exercise

Very little is involved with grooming the Bordeaux regular brushing and bathing when needed the Bordeaux is an average shedder. They will require long daily walks to stay in shape. Keep in mind the dog that does not have regular exercise and metal stimulation becomes bored and ill mannered. If taken for daily exercise this dog would do well in an apartment and are not very active indoors.
