Dogo Argentino

Also known at the Argentino Mastiff this impressive dog was developed in the 1930’s by Antonio Nores Martinez, and was bred to hunt big game. It is still used today to hunt game, search and rescue, police work, and tracking, and on occasion used as guide dogs or service animals. Standing between 24 and 27 in. at the withers, and weighs in between 80 and 100 pounds. He is just slightly longer than he is tall, females may be a bit longer. He has a massive head and powerful jaws. The ears are cropped close to the head, the thick tail tapers to a point. This all white dog has a sleek and shiny coat. A black spot on the dogs head is called a Pirata and is accepted by the Federacion Cinologica Argentina.

Temperament

They have a high tolerance for pain…this being the case they are very tolerant of children. Loyal to their human families and very affectionate. Wonderful gaurd dogs protective of the home, and whatever else they consider their territory. Socializing this powerful dog at an early age will make them more accepting of other dogs, as long as the other dog does not try to dominate them, or is another exceedingly dominant breed. Dogos will do fine in apartment living, but would do better to have a house and yard to call his own. Needing  to be indoors in cold weather. This powerhouse of a  dog needs a strong and dominant owner.

Grooming/Exercise

The Dogos fast growing toenails will need to be maintained so they don’t get too long and cause problems. The Dogo doesn’t have a strong dog smell and is an average shedder. Regular bathing is a necessaity to keep that wonderful white coat clean. This dog needs exercise in the form of daily walks.
