Chinese Crested

Description
Ancient Aztecs kept these dogs as bed warmers or for a source of food. The Chinese trading ships passing through picked up some of these dogs to keep the rodent population down on board ship. They were then renamed Chinese Crested. The infamous stripper “Gypsy Rose Lee” used to own these dogs and bred them. First exhibited in 1885, but didn’t received AKC recognition until 1991. The Chinese Crested stands 12 in. tall and does not weigh over 10 lbs. They come in two coat types Powder Puff and Hairless. Even though called hairless it does have tufts of hair on his feet and tail and top of his head. The Powder Puff has long silky hair all over. Both come in a variety of colors, and even odder you can have Powder Puff and Hairless in the same litter.
Temperament
The Chinese Crested is a loving and playful addition to the family. They enjoy snuggling with their owners, and are sweet natured towards children. Children do have to be on their best behavior with these dogs. Chinese Crested don’t do well if roughly handled. You will have to buy clothes for the Crested when it is cold out he will need a sweater, and Baby Sunscreen on sunny days. They are quick and smart and should be socialized at an early age so it doesn’t develop any bad habits or behavior problems. They need a gentle but firm pack leader to teach them and train them. They enjoy learing to do tricks. Chinese Crested are generally good with other pets in the home.
Grooming/Exercise
Powder Puffs of course will need daily grooming paying extra attention when it is shedding. He will become badly matted if you do not brush him regularly. The hairless Crested you will need to bathe and rub some oil or lotion into his skin to keep it supple…unscented is best. They enjoy going for walks and need them to stay in shape along with a good play session in a secure yard. The do great living in a apartment or townhouse as long as their exercise needs are met.
