Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Description

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is descendant from the King Charles Spaniel and other toy Spaniel breeds. This charming little dog was quite the favorite of Charles II of England who had a great many of them, he even included the little dogs in a portrait that was done of him by the artist  Van Dyck. By the 40’s they were given the prefix Cavalier and designated as a separate breed. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel stands between 12 and 13 in. tall at the withers and weighs between 10 and 18 lbs when fully mature. They have a velvety soft flowing coat that sometimes can be a bit wavy, and comes in black and tan, tri-color, ruby, and blenheim.

Temperament

This breed has a sweet nature and a loving disposition. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is intelligent and will not need much more than gentle instruction, and  training from a kindly pack leader. They are eager to please and more than willing to learn. They enjoy being part of a family and participating in family activities. With early on socialization they will get along quite well with all other members of the home include other dogs and cats. This well behaved little dog will be perfect for the right family.

Grooming/Exercise

You will need to brush your Cavalier on a daily basis paying special attention to the hair around the ears and combing it free from any mats or tangles. You should also keep the hair trimmed around and in between the pads on the feet. Bathe only when needed making sure to completely dry him when finished. They will need to be taken on daily walks and would prefer the whole family join in. They also need a secure area to run and play in. They can live nicely in a townhouse as long as you can provide the needed exercise to keep him healthy.

Life Expectancy is 9 to 14 years.
