Caucasian Ovtcharka

Description

The Caucasian Ovtcharka was used in the later part of the 1960’s East Germany as Border Patrol dogs along the Berlin Wall. When the wall came down in 1989 the some 7,000 Caucasian Ovtcharka were given away to live with families all over Germany. Very selective breeding protects the bloodlines today of this massive dog. The Caucasian Ovtcharka stands between 25 and 28 in. tall at the withers, and weighs between 99 and 154 lbs. Females are on the shorter and lighter end of both scales. They have a massive and heavy coat that keeps out the cold quite well. This coat comes in gray, fawn, and tan pied, brindle, and white.

Temperament

This massive dog needs to know you’re in charge from day one to the last day. He will need extensive socialization in all areas in order for you to have any measure of success with him as a family dog…but if you do achieve that you will have a loyal and loving protector who if needed would put himself in harms way for any member of his “family” and this includes not only you, but all of the family even the cat. You must remain this dog’s pack leader 110% of the time. He is intelligent and will train easily. Not recommended for first time dog owners or people who have no experience with very large dogs.

Grooming/Exercise

Both the short and long coated dog will need daily brushing paying close attention to any area where there may be mats or tangles. Bathe only when needed. They need to be taken on long daily walks, and need a large secure area to run and play in. They cannot live in apartments or townhouses easily and should be in the country on a farm with acreage.

Health

Life Expectancy is on average 10 years.
