Border Terrier

Description

From the border lands in Scotland, in the Cheviot Hills area comes this tough little terrier who was bred to hunt fox, badger, otter and other vermin on the family farm. He may be small but he has lots of endurance and is quite sturdy. As with most small terriers he has gone from working dog to companion dog warming himself by the families hearth. The male Border stands 13 to 16 in. tall and weigh between 13 to 16 lbs. Females 11 to 14 lbs, and 11 to 14 in. tall. The Border Terrier comes in a few color combinations blue and tan, tan and grizzle, and just tan, or red. With only small white patches allowed on the chest.

Temperament

Eager to please and easily trained by a firm pack leader. The Border is very fond of children and gets along well with them. You must socialize this Terrier early on to get him used to all the noises of city living. For the most part he will get along (again if properly socialized) with the family cat, but no amount of socializing will have him see the hamster, bird or other small family pets as anything other than something to kill…and he may want to chase the neighbors cat. They love to dig and need to be in a very secure play area.

Grooming/Exercise

Weekly brushing with a good stiff bristled brush and bi annual trips to the groomer will keep this dogs wiry coat in good health. Bathing on when needed. This Terrier will have energy to burn and will need to go on long daily leashed walks. They can live in a townhouse or apartment as long as their exercise needs are fully met.

Health

Life Expectancy is between 12 to 15 years.

Possible Issues

  • Borders tend to be impervious to pain so their health needs to be watched
  • CECS also known as Spikes Disease ( Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome).
