Black Russian Terrier

Description

This dog is the product of many years of breeding, and over 20 different types of dogs…The Giant Schnauzer, Airedale breeds, Rottweilers, and the Russian Water Dog just to name a few. The Russians were trying to produce a dog that would be a good, solid, and strong police dog . After some 60 years on July 1st the AKC acknowledged those efforts and  gave full registration to the Black Russian Terrier. The Black Russian Terrier has a very strong structure, he is a big dog that is very powerful. The male Black Russian stands 25 to 29 in. tall and weighs in between 80 to 143 lbs. Females are between 25 and 28 in. tall and are on the smaller end of the weight scale. There weather resistant fur is black and wavy and very tight on the body.

Temperament

They have a natural inborn instinct to protect, and this will kick in right around 2 years of age. You must be firm with this dog showing him that you are his pack leader. Curious, intelligent, and eager they will train quite easily. They thrive on the company of their owners and enjoy being around and playing with children. With proper socialization they will get along with other pets in the home, but generally don’t do well with other dominant male dogs.

Grooming/Exercise

His tight wavy coat will need to be professionally trimmed (eyebrows and beard) 2 to 3 times a year. Black Russians will need to be brushed at least once a week if not more. He is always up for a walk, romp or play session, and can live well enough in an townhouse or apartment as long as his exercise needs are met. Black Russians prefer to spend time with their owners no matter where that may be.
