Belgian Tervuren

Description
The Belgian Tervuren (pronounced Ter-Ver-en) is named for the Belgian city of Tervuren. The Tervuren is one of the four sheepdogs from Belgium. The Groenendael (pronounced Grow-en-en-doll), the Malinois (pronounced Mal-in-wah), and teh Laekenois (pronounced Lak-in-wah). Since 1959 the AKC considers the Malinois, Tervuren, and Groenendael all to be seperate breed, but to this day has not even recognized the Laekenois. A well muscled dog who is of medium build and well balanced. The Tervuren male stands 24 to 26 in. in height and weight between 65 -75 lbs. Female Turvurens stand 22 to 44 in . in height and weigh between 60-70 lbs. They have a course medium to long double coat. The thick undercoat, and the longer, straight course outer coat. The outer coat hairs art tipped with black. There is longer hair, called feathering, on the rear of the dog and the back of the forelegs and rear legs, as well as a mane around the dogs neck that continues down his chest. In male Tervurens this appears more noticeable. They come in shades anywhere from fawn to mahogany with the masking around the face and ears. Dogs tend to get darker in color as they get older.
Temperament
The Tervuren is a very smart, and a serious dog. This dog is not for the inexpirenced dog owner or somebody who is not familiar with the breed. The Turvuren needs a take charge pack leader who can mentally challenge him. With proper socialization he can be a active member of the family…he will not do well locked away from his people. This dog if allowed to become bored will become destructive in a expensive way.
Grooming/Exercise
The Tervuren will need daily brushing to keep his coat healthy and free form debris. You will need to be diligent about cutting out matts that may form in the feathers. Bathing only when necessary. The Tervuren is a herding do with a great deal of energy. He can do well in an apartment as long as he has a secure area to run and receives daily walks.
