Belgian Shepherd Malinois

Description

Named for the Beligum city Malines the Belgian Shepherd, or Malinois (pronouced Mal in wah) is one of four types of Belgain Shepherds the others being the Tervuren (pronounced Terv-yer-en), the Laekenois (pronounced Lak-in-wah), and the Groenendael (pronounced Grow-en-en-doll). The Malinois was bred as a herding dog, and to protect the flocks. He is considered to be a square breed…meaning he is as long as he is tall. Deep chested and with a muscular body type the Malinois has a short double thick coat the ranges from fawn to red in coloring with the black mask and ear tips. Male Malinois stand between 24 and 26 in. tall and females from 22 to 24 in. They can weigh between 55-65 lbs.

Temperament

The Malinois needs a confident, mature pack leader for an owner. This is not a dog for the first time dog owenr or for someone who has no understanding of the breed. He needs a clear set of rules that he understands have to be followed.n The Belgian Malinois can make a wonderful and naturally protective family pet through early socialization. The need to be part of the family and not kept outdoors aways from its humans. They can become destructive if left alone for too long a time. With the correct socialization he will get along with the family cat and other pets.

Grooming/Exercise

A good regular brushing, and bathing very infrequently is suggested so not to remove to much oil from the water proof coat. Don’t forget the Belgian Malinois is a working dog, and will need a large amount of exercise along with mental activities to occupy his mind. He is fairly low activity when indoors and as long as his exercise needs are met can live in a townhouse, or apartment.

Life Expectancy is 12 to 14 years.
