Bedlington Terrier

Description

In all honesty he looks like a lamb, but make no mistake he is all terrier…The Bedlington Terrier is named for the mining town of Bedlington in Northumberland in the Northeastern part of England he was originally called the Rodbery (or Rothbury) Terrier. The fur is like that of the Poodle…woolly, and non shedding. The Bedlington comes in an assortment of colors dark brown, liver, black and blue they also can have tan marking. A Bedlington should never be solid white. His body resembles that of a Greyhound or Whippet simply put he is built for speed. The Bedlington stands 16 to 17 in. tall with females ranging between 15 to 16 in. tall. They weigh in somewhere between 18 to 23 lbs.

Temperament

True to Terrier form the Bedlington will need strong supervision, and training, and proper socialization at a young age in order for him to get along with other pets in the household. He will get along with cats and do well with children. Do not let other dogs bully him or dominate him or you will be quick to find out that he can hold his own. You will need to be his pack leader. The Bedlington is smart, loving and loyal to his family.

Grooming/Exercise

The Bedlington is considered hypoallergenic. The Bedlington will require professional dog grooming like that of a poodle every 6 to 8 weeks depending on how rapid the hair growth is. The will need to be bathed as often as necessary. This is a very active dog, and will require a great deal of exercise to keep them happy, and healthy. They will do well in apartment living as long as the are getting the required amount of exercise. Do not let your Bedlington off leash to run unless your in a secure area.
