Basset Fauve De Bretagne

Description

Was developed from the larger hunting dog the Grand Fauve de Bretagne (now extinct),  in France. After World War II it is believed this breed was also on the verge of extinction as well, but the breed was revived by breeding in the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen and the Standard Wirehaired Dachshund. The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne (middle breed) is still in existence but is very rare today. The Basset Fauve de Bretagne stands between 12 and 15 in tall and weighs between 26 and 42 lbs. at maturity…females being on the smaller end of the scale of both height and weight. The Bassets coat is short and dense and on the course side. Reddish blond in color with the ears being a bit darker than the body color.

Temperament

A happy, outgoing, friendly little French hound. He will enjoy being part of a family, and If properly socialized at a very young age he will do well with all family members and other household pets with the exception of rabbits, hamsters, and the like. In a controlled environment his training will go far; unfortunately,so will he if he gets the scent of a rabbit. Naturally born hunters you will need to be his pack leader to get results in training

Grooming/Exercise

A regular brushing is needed to maintain a healthy coat on the Basset Fauve de Bretagne. Bathe when necessary. Regular dental exams should be done, and having the nails trimmed is recommended.  This breed being a hunter will need an extremely secure yard to play in…they have a tendency to follow their noses which invariably can get them into trouble. They will need long daily walks (on a leash) to stay healthy and happy with you being the pack leader at all times.
