Australian Terrier

Description
In Melbourne Australia in 1868 this little dog made his debut as the Australian Rough Coated Terrier. He is a generous mix of terriers…the Skye, Dandie Dinmont, Yorkshire, Irish, Cairn, and Norwich. The Australian Terrier, or Aussie as he is often called, was bred for hunting rats, snakes, being a watchdog, shepherd, and of course a companion. The Australian Terrier stands between 9 and 11 in. tall and weighs in at around 9 to 14 lbs.. He is considered one of the smallest in the terrier group. The Aussie is a sturdy little dog with sharply pointed ears, and very dark eyes. He has a course weatherproof coat that comes in a variety of colors…red, blue with tan, and sandy.
Temperament
This is a self assured little beast, smart and willing to please. He will need a firm hand in training from someone who can be his pack leader. Quick to learn and smart. The Aussie can be a barker if its not controlled from the beginning, and he is taught that he only need to bark to sound the alert. He will do well with children as long as the children are gentle and understand not to play rough with him. With proper socialization he will get along with other pets in the home; however, he may chase anything outside.
Grooming/Exercise
A good brushing several times a week being careful with the softer undercoat. The Aussie will not need frequent washing. Once a month should suffice for bathing him. You may have to trim the fur around the eyes and ears. You will have to on occasion pluck the hair from inside the ears. The Aussie will need to go on daily walks and should have a secure area to play in. The Aussie will do fine in a townhouse as long as his exercise needs are met in other ways.
Health
Life Expectancy is 15 or more years.
The Australian Terrier is a hale and hardy little breed that suffers from no known major ailments. Make sure you have annual checkups and keep up on vaccinations.
