Australian Shepherd

Description
The origin of this dog is a bit unclear. Rumored to have maybe originated in Spain. Also what is not known is why it is named the Australian Shepherd…This was not developed in the “land down under” but rather in western North America in the 19th and 20th centuries. This is a herding dog that was bred to handle the climate and terrain here in North America…not to mention the predators. Males stand between 20 to 23 in. tall and females are between 18 to 21 in. tall. The weight averages are between 50 to 65 lbs. This attractive dog has wonderful coloring and markings. They come in red, black with our without tan points. Red and Blue Merle with a patchwork appearance to them. Some have blue eyes, or hazel, amber, or brown and some don’t. Its possible to have a dog with any combination of the eye color. On rare occasion you can have a bi colored eye or eyes.
Temperament
Some Aussies are working dogs, and will be more guarded and reserved around people they don’t know…including nipping and chasing if you don’t train him well. His protectiveness can be frightening to others. Then you have the family dog the one who would rather hang out with you on the sofa all day watching reruns of Lassie. Loyal and loving these guys make fantastic family pets. A smart dog they are fast learners, but they also have a playful streak. They can become bored easily, so its up to you to invent games for him and to keep the training interesting.
Grooming/Exercise
Aussies are fairly easy to maintain. Brush his coat when needed, and bathe on occasion. This is a high energy herding dog, so he will need lots of daily exercise in the form of walks, and games. He will also need mental stimulation. A inactive, bored Aussie has a possibility of becoming destructive.
