Anatolian Shepherd

This dog breed possibly dates back to Mesopotamia 6,000 years ago, and may have migrated with the transhumance protecting their flocks from predators into what is now known as Turkey. The dogs were called Coban Kopegi or Shepherd Dog, and were believed to be a cross between the Kangal Dog and the Akbash Dog. A well muscled breed. Strong and powerful with a thick neck and wide head. Impressive…standing 28 to 32 in. at the withers, and tipping the scales at 88 to 145 lbs. Females are of course on the smaller end of the scale in both height and weight. They come in all colors with a creamy white color being the most common accompained with large spots of color (no more than 30%) covering the body…this affect is knowns as piebald, and they may or may not have a black mask around the face and ears.
Temperament
This dog was meant to be a force of one and is. Guarding his owners herds without human aid or instruction. This dog is not recommended for the first time dog owner, or someone who may be timid about raising such a dog. A great deal of socialization must take place in order for this dog to be a good companion. Very intelligent, and easily trained they may however choose not to obey a lesser expirenced dog owner. Once established into a family they may herd the children and other pets in the family considering them part of their flock.
Grooming/Exercise
These big dogs need to be brushed on occasion more so during the shedding season, and of course bathed when needed. No apartment living for these dogs…they just don’t fit, and need a secure large back yard to romp in and long daily walks.
