American Hairless Terrier

Description

This interesting breed was first discovered in 1972. In a litter of Rat Terriers one female was born completely without hair. Owned by Willie and Edwin Scott of Louisiana…her name Josephine. Josephine was bred and in her first litter she produced another hairless female, and then for the next few years all her pups were born with hair…when she was 9 Josephine had a litter with two hairless pups…one female and a male. These two pups were the foundation of the breed American Hairless Terrier we have today. They are 7 to 16 in. in height, and weigh anywhere between 5 to 16 pounds. They are a well put together little dog. They have pink skin with black, golden or red patches. Pups are born fuzzy but will shed this fuzz at about 6 weeks of age.

Temperament

Playful and loving these dogs are great with kids especially when raised with them. The American Hairless Terrier is intelligent, lively, fearless, and makes for a  great companion dog. They have all the best Terrier qualities wrapped up. This would make a good dog for people who suffer from allergies.

Grooming/Exercise

In the grooming department they do have some special needs. Since they do not have hair they do sweat so bathing 2 to 3 times per week is essential for keeping there skin in good condition, and cutting down on doggie B.O.. American Hairless Terriers sunburn so they will need sunscreen to protect them from the harmful rays of the sun, and in the winter they will need a warm coat to go out walking in. If there skin becomes dry they will need to be rubbed down with a lanolin free lotion. They need long walks everyday, and enjoy playing games with their owner(s). They do well enough in apartment living but are active indoors, and need outside play for at least a half hour a day. They enjoy digging so their nails need regular trimming.
