American Eskimo

Description

The American Eskimo dogs origins are from Germany. The breed is an eclectic of many of the Spitz type dogs such as Keeshond, Pomeranian, When the standards for the Keeshond and Pom were formed somehow the all white dogs had no place in either breed. and it is what for many years called the white German Spitz. Because of the ill will felt towards Germans during WWI the dog was called the American Spitz, and sometime after the war the name was changed all together to remove any traces of the German language to American Eskimo or Eskie. The Eskie comes in three sizes…Toy 9 to 12 in. tall and 6 to 10 lbs. Miniature over 12 in. to 15 in. and 12 to 20 lbs.  Standard over 15in and up to 19 in tall and 18 to 35 lbs. The Eskie no matter the size has a glorious snow white coat and on occasion it will have cream or biscuit colored markings. Thicker insulating undercoat with the top coat growing up through the undercoat. These dogs      (especially the males) have a mane around their necks.

Temperament

The Eskies make all around good companions and family dogs. They are smart, easy to train, eager to please, and alert. They do well with children. With proper socialization they will do well with other pets in the household. They at first are wary of strangers but with an introduction can learn to get along. They absolutely thrive at being a part of the family unit. They do need a pack leader to learn manners and so not to develop bad behavioural issues.

Grooming/Exercise

As you might expect from looking at this dog grooming is a priority. The Eskie will need daily brushing to keep his coat free from debris, and to keep his coat healthy. Bathe only when needed. They do have special shampoos for all white dogs. and wipes for the tear stains that Eskies are prone to having. They will do well to have a secure yard to play in, but will still require daily walks where you are the leader. As long as their exercise needs are met they would do well in an apartment.

The American Eskimo Dog Breed

There are 3 sizes of the American Eskimo breed which are toy, miniature and standard.  This particular dog breed is always white and sometimes a little bit of cream markings.  All dog breeds have a possibility of some genetic health problems.  The American Eskimo is a pretty healthy breed but hip dysplasia is a possibility but not likely.

These dogs make great companions and love being part of a family.  They also prefer cold weather but they can also live in a warm environment.  They need a good exercise routine since they do have lots of energy.  They do need to be brushed a couple times a week to get out all of the extra hair out of their coat.

The American Eskimo needs lots of love, attention and play time.  In turn, they will make a wonderful companion for you and your family.
