Akbash

The Akbash breed is thought to have been developed some 3000 years ago in Turkey. Bred to protect livestock for their masters. The Akbash’s white coats helped them stand out from the predators. Akbashs have superior hearing, are well muscled, and have extraordinarily strong jaws. Their short, double, all white coats not only are weather resistant, but carry very little odor, and does not matt. They have light golden to dark brown eyes. Akbash are big…massive even… standing anywhere from 28 to 32 in. tall and tipping the scales at 90 to 130 lbs. This breed is not a herding dog, but rather a dog that lives with the flock and protects it.
Temperament
The Akbash is an independent breed, but with proper socialization can get along reasonably with any creature. He is not shy, and when used as guard dog he is not personable with people either. Having such a strong independent mind they may think they know whats best over their masters. He will bond with his flock, and feels it is his job above all others to protect them. This is not a family pet, but a working dog, and not a dog for first time dog owners or owners who are inexperienced with this type of working dog. Akbash is not only a top notch working dog, but he is a thinking dog as well.
Grooming/Exercise
They require a fair amount of brushing as the Akbash is a high shedding dog. Bathe only when needed. Akabsh are a low activity dog, but very athletic and will not do well in an apartment. Needing a large area to run off lead a rural setting is best with a very large enclosed area somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/4 acre.
