Afghan Hound

The country of origin for this interesting breed is Afghanistan where it was bred in the 19th century to hunt hares and gazelle in the mountainous regions of the country, and it is one of the oldest breeds of sighthounds. Genetics place the Afghan hound among other breeds showing some of the least divergence from the wolf on some markers. They stand 24 to 29 in. in height and weigh in at 45 to 60 lbs. They come in a wide range of colors. Any white on the head is discouraged, or all white dog with patches of another color may be indicative of bad breeding. Some dogs appear to have a furry face or mustache this feature is called a “Mandarin”.
Temperament
This dog can be aloof if not properly socialized from puppy-hood. The Afghan must be calmly but firmly trained. This is a very dignified dog who is also loyal, timid, playful, and loving with a very sensitive nature. Afghans can do well with older children, but probably shouldn’t be in a house with young children. Housebreaking can be a difficult with this breed. Not only does this dog enjoy and require daily strolls, but needs wide open spaces to stretch his legs and run. This dog will not do well in a townhouse or apartment type living space, but rather a house with a large yard, or someplace in the country with acreage.
Grooming
The long, flowing, and silky coat of the Afghan Hound demands a lot of special attention. Afghans do shed some. These guys cannot be brushed when their coats are dry, but rather fresh from the bath is recommended. There are special brushes for this breed.
Health
Possible Issues
The Afghan is a healthy hound with little to no health problems, but does have a low tolerance for pain of any kind, so any injuries must be taken care of immediately.
